The videos from Eco Seagate and the team building challenges they took part in were a great reminder that life, work, and relationships take time to build and improve. The relationships and trust that were being built between team members from all levels of the organization were a priceless training tool for life. This is because we live in a world where the motto is to work and climb our way to the top at any cost. What if we took the time to build relationships or in some cases rebuild relationships that have become strained due to a lack of team mentality but more of an “I” thought process? The preparation, experience, and skill-building through training prior to the event and during cannot be taught on the job, this makes for a unique experience for all members who are chosen to see their fellow co-workers in vulnerable situations but it also allows an opportunity for one to step up when they may not in the workforce due to their position.
This type of training or something similar is important in a high-performing organization because team building and the foundation of relationships helps an organization grow. Each member who participates has an opportunity to see their co-worker, supervisor, manager, or CEO in a new light and see them as a person, this breaks down barriers because it allows each person to use their skills and knowledge to help one another through the rigorous activities. Brown (2006) shared an excerpt from Watkins and he stated that through the years he has received criticism from stockholders for the event, and though he cannot precisely measure the results, to him there are obvious signs that it is working. “The only thing you know for sure,” he says, “is that if you do nothing, then nothing will happen, and nothing will change”.
I think that any organization, not just my own, would benefit from an activity like the one put together by Eco Seagate. The one in the video is ideal for that company but my organization would benefit from such an activity that is available in our area. The team building challenges would get people out of the office and out of their comfort zone where they can work together with individuals they may not be familiar with or have strained relationships to rebuild. This would also boost the spirit of the office because new friendships and work relationships would be formed and people would look forward to going to work again.
