A635.3.3.RB - 50 Reasons Not to Change/The Tribes We
Lead
Change is inevitable in our personal lives, social circles, and work, however; the difficulty comes when people resist or refuse to change. Watkins (n.d.) shared 50 reasons why people do not change a few of which are the boss will never buy it, it’s too much trouble to change, it can’t be done, it won’t work in this department, and it’s impossible. There are many of the common answers when someone in an organization makes a suggestion for change but they find resistance. I have faced many of these when I have made a suggestion for change and I find the supervisor goes through a list of these answers each time there is a suggestion. However, I am not free from using these terms, not necessarily at work but in my personal life. I find I use them when I really do not want to do something but I do not want to hurt someone’s feelings, so I use these phrases as an excuse. Although, looking at this from a different perspective now, I can see that resisting change is not always a good thing and I should take a further look next time before saying no.
Rick (2011) shared 12 reasons people resist change and he has listed many of the reasons for which change is not accepted. The reasons are a misunderstanding about the need for change/ when the reason for change is unclear, fear of the unknown, lack of competence, connected to the old way, low trust, temporary fad, not being consulted, poor communication, change of routine, exhaustion, not seeing the benefit/ reward. All of these listed are common indicators why people resist change. For my personal level and resistance to change, I fear the unknown. I like to know what is going to happen, who will be involved, and what the expected outcome will be.
Zetlin (2015) shared ways one can conquer their fear of change which include: understanding what is the worst that can happen if I make the change, what is the worst that can happen if I don’t make the change, understanding that we cannot know everything, and if I don’t make the change now, when will I? All of these are things we can ask ourselves when it is time to make changes in our lives in order to put down the resistant shield and work toward accepting change will happen.
Godin (2009) shared on his TED talk about tribes and people we connect with and relate to in different aspects of our lives. He also explained that we need challenge, culture, and diversity in our tribes. I do agree with Seth that change is driven by tribes because people want to have support and backing for what they are seeking to create or change. It is difficult for one person to stand-alone and face the world when trying to start a movement but if they have a team of people backing them, it does make it easier and the challenge
